Many webmasters are understandably worried about the credit crunch and the adverse effect it may have on their online business. To help keep your business growing and keep profits stable it is a good idea to try and cut costs when and where possible. The cost cutting shouldn’t be negative though and harm the level of service you provide.

A good way to do this is to change hosts. It is a bit of hassle for you but for the sake of a mornings work you could potentially save yourself hundreds of dollars per year (dependent on how big your websites are).

Top Tip To Get A Good Price
The best way I have found to get a good deal is to haggle. You won’t be able to do this with websites like Hostgator but you can with the companies who are much smaller (but still provide a great service). I haggled on my the new reseller hosting account I recently opened and got a price of just over £17, the package normally costs £29.99 – this is over 40% off!

Just contact the host telling them your requirements (make sure they differ from their packages available) and the budget you are trying to stick to. See what they come back with and if no good then just move onto the next hosting provider!

Eventually you can get yourself a great deal with a really good host and in the process lower your costs and help your business beat the credit crunch!

I recently decided to change my reseller hosting provider. I manage quite a few websites through my reseller hosting so good customer service is very important to me for when problems arise on various sites, this is something my old host provider wasn’t very good at!

I started off by doing quite a bit of research using a checklist I put together, the provider had to be UK based and I didn’t want to be spending more than £20 ($40) per month, as well as a few other requirements. Having came down to 3 companies I then decided to use <a href="http://www.summerhosting.com/2008/03/06/use-forum-polls-to-find-out-about-hosts/"title="Forum Opinions" target="_blank">forums for opinions.

In a thread on a UK business forum I am apart of a couple of other host providers contacted me about if I would be interested in using them. I told them my requirements and asked them to give me their best price, as well as the company I am currently expecting to go with (just to get the price lower!).

A few chats later I had got myself some great reseller hosting which beat my requirements and came in well under my monthly budget – the hosting is also very fast and the support from the host so far has been brilliant.

Conclusion
To get the best price for your hosting always contact companies saying you have slightly different requirements to the packages they sell and if they could offer you a price for your needs. Get quite a few quotes and tell them what prices other companies are offering.

You can soon have yourself some great hosting at a really good price!

Many webmasters start up their websites on a budget, as a result many go with the cheapest hosting they can buy. This is all very well but you get what you pay for in this world, and buying cheap hosting can end up not saving you money but actually costing you money!

Cheap hosts often have more downtime. When your website is down people can’t visit it, these visitors may have bought from you or clicked an adsense ad on your site. And by not seeing your site they are also highly unlikely to be a return visitor!

Cheap hosts often oversell too much on servers. Overselling is what allows cheap hosts to provide hosting at such a low cost. If overselling gets out of hand the cpu and ram become overloaded and your site is down! If this happens once again you lose customers/return visitors.

Slow performance can annoy visitors. If your website loads quite slowly (this could be down to your coding, not the server) visitors will get annoyed and probably not want to visit your site again.

When your site expands you will then have money to move to larger/better hosting package. In the process you will need to mvoe the site to the new hosting, this can often have problems causing errors and requires the site to be offline for hours/days whilst the move is complete. Being on a quality host from the start avoids this.

Poor customer service from the host. Cheap hosts sometimes scrimp on the support staff as well, so getting answers when you have urgent problems can take longer than on more costly hosts.

Less customer features. Some hosts provide unique features for members, whether it is web design templates or extra cpanel features. Cheap hosts often won’t provide anything extra which may have helped your website.

In this blog post i’ve listed 6 reasons why going with a cheap host is not a good idea, Im sure those with poor experiences could list even more reasons. For the sake of an extra $4 or $5 per month I highly recommend going with a quality host! You get what you pay for!

Hosting in considerably cheaper in the US then in the UK. The reason is because the UK is much more expensive, this doesnt mean prices are automatically higher. The costs of the buildings (in which the servers are kept), staff wages, electricity, heating and phone lines all cost more in the UK, this is what pushes the prices up.

However I still believe UK hosting is good value for money for UK websites. It makes communicating with the company easier and benefits geo targetting in the search engines. It is also good to support your businesses closer to home.

So will the UK hosting prices ever come down as low as the US? I doubt it, not in the next decade anyway.
