Mr Matt Cutts from Google:

Before this video was released I’d been saying for years that the location of the server your website is hosted on had an effect on your search rankings. This video is proof, end of discussion. So if you aren’t already then go forth and get a region specific provider or hosted exchange service.

A fast loading website is important. For users there is nothing more annoying then webpages taking ages to load – they quickly go off to find another resource to fulfill their needs. So getting your site to load quickly is a must, just like cars – faster is better! But first you need to know how quick your site loads, then you can decide whether it needs improving.

2 Simple Tools

These 2 services allow you to quickly see the size of specific web pages, the load time and average speed per KB.

Resource 1) iWebtool – simply enter a list of URLs and click the ‘Check!’ button.
Resource 2) Selfseo – exactly the same as above.

You will find the results vary using both tools, so I advise you to use them both.

More Extensive Tool

If you want a bit more data to peek at, then use the WebsiteOptimization report. This tells you; object size totals (such as HTML, css etc), external objects and the download times depending on connection speeds. It also tells you an analysis and gives recommendations.

During the month of September the UK domain registrar and webhost provider LCN are running some amazing offers! Each day they are posting a new promotion code, each one is only valid for 24hrs so you have to move quick.

You can check out the current promotion code on THIS PAGE. Each day it is updated. As I write this the offer is a whopping 99% off 1 years web hosting, effectively giving it away!

What is the catch? There isn’t one. The company are just hoping that by becoming a customer when you come to renew your hosting/domain in 1 years time that you will stay with them and pay the normal price (which is quite cheap anyway as it happens).

So if you are after a reputable UK hosting provider visit LCN today and save lots of money.

I don’t know about you but the idea to me of living a longer life is quite good! And working more (or at least continuing to work a lot) will mean more profit so more money. So if I work long and hard I will have more money and live to a greater age. What a mix!

So we may complain about working hard, but it will actually help us in more ways than 1.

Now HostGator has became an even more attractive host option because they now offer free premium templates for all customers! In total there are 4450 templates (at time of posting). The templates normally cost upwards of at least $60 so this is a big benefit considering the cost of hosting.

How To Get Your Free Premium Templates:

First you need a HostGator hosting account

Login to your cpanel

Click the “Website Templates” button under the “Hostgator Links” section

Navigate to the template you want

Enter your details in the “Download Form” (username, username, password)

Click “Download Now”

I am very impressed by the number of templates available and the quality of them! I have three websites hosted with Hostgator so I’m very happy these templates are available. If you are looking for a new hosting provider of just want to get more value for the money you spend on hosting then I recommend you check out HostGator as they’ve always been great for me!

Many webmasters are understandably worried about the credit crunch and the adverse effect it may have on their online business. To help keep your business growing and keep profits stable it is a good idea to try and cut costs when and where possible. The cost cutting shouldn’t be negative though and harm the level of service you provide.

A good way to do this is to change hosts. It is a bit of hassle for you but for the sake of a mornings work you could potentially save yourself hundreds of dollars per year (dependent on how big your websites are).

Top Tip To Get A Good Price
The best way I have found to get a good deal is to haggle. You won’t be able to do this with websites like Hostgator but you can with the companies who are much smaller (but still provide a great service). I haggled on my the new reseller hosting account I recently opened and got a price of just over £17, the package normally costs £29.99 – this is over 40% off!

Just contact the host telling them your requirements (make sure they differ from their packages available) and the budget you are trying to stick to. See what they come back with and if no good then just move onto the next hosting provider!

Eventually you can get yourself a great deal with a really good host and in the process lower your costs and help your business beat the credit crunch!

Given the nature of the topic when the price of fuel is dropping and isn’t really on the agenda the website gets very little traffic. When the price of fuel is rising and everyone is going mad about it the traffic rockets.

At the moment everything is quiet, and with the price of oil dropping I expect it to be the same for a quite a while. So now is certainly the right time for me to move the website from its own hosting package onto my own reseller hosting. This is going to save me just £40 over the next 12 months (about $71 at time of posting).

It will probably take me around an hour to set-up the new hosting, move the files across and change nameservers. Doing it properly should also ensure very little or hopefully zero downtime. And for the sake of an hour Ive saved myself £40 in expenses over the next 12 months.

So if you run a website which is no longer hot but you want to keep the website, change the hosting package to lower costs and increase profits!

Everyday I see messages on forums of people asking for help with questions related their hosting or coding on their website. The people that give proper replys and help you out are generous, they aren’t getting any real gain out of it (apart from a little bit of satisfaction). The lack of gain means few replys and longer to sort out your problem.

If you have any kind of problem with your hosting or a script, or domain related questions etc etc you are best to just go straight to your hosting provider. You are paying them money for their services, part of their service is the help and support they provide – they have to help you!

In my experience just going straight to your host gets a quicker response and a better response than posting on a forum. The majority of people on a forum probably won’t know how to solve your problem, the hosting support will. The hosting providers also have access to your site so they can take a look to get a full understanding of the issue, unlike forum members.

So next time you need a question answering related to the functions of your website (not promotional questions and stuff like that!) just go straight to your host and save yourself a lot of time!

I recently decided to change my reseller hosting provider. I manage quite a few websites through my reseller hosting so good customer service is very important to me for when problems arise on various sites, this is something my old host provider wasn’t very good at!

I started off by doing quite a bit of research using a checklist I put together, the provider had to be UK based and I didn’t want to be spending more than £20 ($40) per month, as well as a few other requirements. Having came down to 3 companies I then decided to use forums for opinions.

In a thread on a UK business forum I am apart of a couple of other host providers contacted me about if I would be interested in using them. I told them my requirements and asked them to give me their best price, as well as the company I am currently expecting to go with (just to get the price lower!).

A few chats later I had got myself some great reseller hosting which beat my requirements and came in well under my monthly budget – the hosting is also very fast and the support from the host so far has been brilliant.

Conclusion
To get the best price for your hosting always contact companies saying you have slightly different requirements to the packages they sell and if they could offer you a price for your needs. Get quite a few quotes and tell them what prices other companies are offering.

You can soon have yourself some great hosting at a really good price!

The main two ways webmasters manage their websites is via FTP or cPanel. I myself use cPanel because I find it really easy to use and love all the various functions and features that it has. Some webmasters prefer FTP, it is just a personal choice and shouldn’t really affect the success of your website.

However it can affect the success of your website. If you stuggle to manage your website then development of the actual site will be slow, costing you time and money.

It is important that you pick either cPanel or FTP and master it. Even if you are only ever intending to set-up and run one website, you want to be fully confident and sure in what you are doing. I run quite a few websites and have done for a few years now, I’ve always used cPanel and feel very comfortable using it. On the other hand I know nothing about FTP and never intend to manage any website via FTP.

Conclusion
When you are looking for a new hosting provider make sure you get hosting with your preferred choice, and stick with it throughout your online journey. Because if you chop and change between the two it could affect your success!

Many hosting providers have affiliate programs that anyone can sign-up to. They then pay commission on all sales made by affiliates, this is how websites like ours and the ‘hosting reviewers’ make money!

The problem with this is that in order to make money the reviewers have to make sales. If they give a bad review of a company, no one will use them and the reviewer won’t make any money. This pushes the affiliates into giving positive reviews, even if the service provider they are reviewing isn’t very good.

We’ve all read the kinds of reviews before that I’m talking about. They give the host 10/10 and say how great the customer service, how amazing the 99.9% uptime is and that you can’t beat the amazing prices! When in truth the affiliate has never used the service, hasn’t researched the service and knows very little about the service provider at all.

How To Avoid Such Reviews
You can use webmaster forums to find out if a provider is any good, forums don’t generally allow affiliate links so unless those replying work for the company (unlikely) you should get decent feedback on whether the company is any good.

You can also try and use websites like ours. In our list of hosting providers we don’t give a full review, we simply list individual companies and give hard facts about them, like how long they have been established, number of customers they have etc etc. This way you can make your own mind up.

So watch out for those hosting reviews who praise too much, they may have an ulterior motive!

When starting out many webmasters don’t appreciate how important it is, only after running into problems on your website do you realise how vital good customer service is.

So in web hosting what is ‘good’ customer service?

A quick response is vital. If your site is coming up with errors meaning the site won’t display at all you need it sorting and quickly! A company taking 24hrs to respond is going to cost you money in lost revenue, zero user satisfaction and no chance of visitors returning.

They must be able to sort your problems properly. It may only be simple but if it takes the host a day to sort it out then what happens when you have a major problem. This often happens when you buy hosting from a ’reseller’ and the reseller doesn’t actually have any technical knowledge.

They should be polite. Manners cost nothing and although it isn’t critical it is good to be able to build up a relationship with those who help you which will benefit you in the future.

So when you are drawing up a shortlist remember to get some feeback on hosts and it will save you headaches in the future!

One way to do this is to store your images on free image hosting providers, this will mean more disk space for other files and should ensure your webpages load faster.

FreeStockImages.net reported on their new Free Unlimited Image Hosting service which requires no sign-up and has very few adverts to annoy you. This is a great place to store all your images and save on your precious disk space. Some image host providers all offer upgrade services which you have to pay for but you get extra services for your money.

Once you’ve uploaded your images most host providers will allow you to keep them hosted for an indefinite amount of time so you don’t need to worry about constantly returning to the hoster!

Many webmasters start up their websites on a budget, as a result many go with the cheapest hosting they can buy. This is all very well but you get what you pay for in this world, and buying cheap hosting can end up not saving you money but actually costing you money!

Cheap hosts often have more downtime. When your website is down people can’t visit it, these visitors may have bought from you or clicked an adsense ad on your site. And by not seeing your site they are also highly unlikely to be a return visitor!

Cheap hosts often oversell too much on servers. Overselling is what allows cheap hosts to provide hosting at such a low cost. If overselling gets out of hand the cpu and ram become overloaded and your site is down! If this happens once again you lose customers/return visitors.

Slow performance can annoy visitors. If your website loads quite slowly (this could be down to your coding, not the server) visitors will get annoyed and probably not want to visit your site again.

When your site expands you will then have money to move to larger/better hosting package. In the process you will need to mvoe the site to the new hosting, this can often have problems causing errors and requires the site to be offline for hours/days whilst the move is complete. Being on a quality host from the start avoids this.

Poor customer service from the host. Cheap hosts sometimes scrimp on the support staff as well, so getting answers when you have urgent problems can take longer than on more costly hosts.

Less customer features. Some hosts provide unique features for members, whether it is web design templates or extra cpanel features. Cheap hosts often won’t provide anything extra which may have helped your website.

In this blog post i’ve listed 6 reasons why going with a cheap host is not a good idea, Im sure those with poor experiences could list even more reasons. For the sake of an extra $4 or $5 per month I highly recommend going with a quality host! You get what you pay for!
